Have you been interested in the Law of Attraction? Have you become interested, tried to implement it, and been frustrated with lack of progress, or have you been one who has had success in manifesting what you want?
Over many years, I had read about, and listened to presentations on, the Law of Attraction, or just the idea that what you think about is attracted to you, whether positive or negative. Of course, these were mostly emphasizing the positive results. There was a time a few years ago when I said to my wife, “That positive thinking just doesn’t work for everybody.”
The past decade was one my family would love to forget, as it was for many families. My first career ended in 2002. The startup I was working for went under because the investors had lost their shirts in the stock market crash following 9/11. My entire staff was let go with me, in the aftermath of the worst technology recession ever, the dot-com bust followed by the September 11 tragedy. I finally became a real estate agent in early 2003, and borrowed from credit cards to bootstrap my real estate business. The house we are living in was purchased to be renovated, but the renovation is still not done. My oldest son, who was on my IT staff at the failed company, moved in with us after his apartment lease expired. We struggled to make whatever we could to pay our bills, all three of us. My son eventually got a solid position, and began helping us with financial support.
By the end of 2007, I had built my real estate business to a team of three agents plus myself, and we had grown our revenues 20% in a year when the market was down 10%, so I thought we had finally arrived, and I could start paying off the debt, which by then was huge. The real estate bust of 2008 make the dot-com bust look puny by comparison. I ended up dissolving my team, negotiating long-term payoff plans with most of my creditors, and have limped along the last two years at less than half of my former revenue. I have continued to borrow money from relatives to make up shortfalls.
I know that many of you who may read this have experienced, or may still be experiencing, circumstances like mine, or even worse. Many of you are looking for a way to get to sustainable prosperity, and have probably tried one or more of the Law of Attraction methods that are widely available in the personal development community. This is my story of that journey, at least the beginning of it.
I purposely spent 2009 thinking about what I really should be doing. I wanted to understand where my passions truly lay, and try to find a way to follow them in making a living. The primary reasons I got into real estate were an interest in houses (the renovation that still isn’t done) and my love of meeting new people. I became a very competent agent, but like most everybody who enters the real estate profession, I was very naive about what is actually required, and what the financial situation really is for the majority of agents. While I still continue to practice real estate consulting and brokerage activities today, I had come to realize that I was not happy with several aspects of that business, and the realistic possibility of significant income was very low for the next several years.
In the fall of 2009, I was introduced to a very unusual network marketing company with a very low cost to become a representative. I had experience in other network marketing programs, and this was so unusual that I decided to give it a try. A few days later, as I was checking out a web site associated with that company, I came across a video of a Larry King Live show featuring five of the teachers from The Secret. I watched the video and was blown away.
I had heard some of the advertisements for the movie The Secret when it was released, but had paid little attention, mainly because I was so focused on working real estate for income to catch up with my debt. I may have even heard something about the movie being about the Law of Attraction, but I probably just did not care at that time. I have generally been an optimistic person throughout my life, but at that time, I was functioning from a philosophy of entrepreneurial hard work as my way to reach the abundance I was missing.
What those teachers shared with Larry King was some of the best material I had ever heard on attracting abundance. I immediately went to my local Borders and purchased the DVD, then watched it twice that evening. The Secret was absolutely the best presentation of the law, and the methodology needed to apply it, I had ever seen, even though I now know that there were some important issues that were not fully covered in the movie. I resolved to apply myself fully to manifesting my dreams right away.
About the time that I began to study the Law of Attraction and personal development materials, I accepted the realization that my passions lay in teaching, coaching, speaking and writing. That idea had been forming for some time in my mind and heart. I won’t go into the details here, but it meshed perfectly with my desire to actually change myself and manifest the life I wanted to live.
By the end of 2009, I had constructed a dream and established daily practices to modify my thinking, my beliefs and my emotions, and focus on the dream. Of course, nothing came quickly, and I have not yet manifested any substantial portion of my dream. However, I have changed myself significantly, and I consider that great progress.
I will be posting more about the processes I have discovered and used, and which ones have been worthwhile for me, and I will keep you up to date on my successes and stumbles as I progress in this journey. Check back once or twice a week, or subscribe to this category to find out what I have learned. I would love to hear about your experiences in manifesting abundance also, so leave a comment or contact me directly. Thanks!
